Akwasi Opong-Fosu

Mr. Akwasi Opong-Fosu has had a distinguished public service career in the Republic of Ghana. As a former Minister of State and Minister of Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation, as well as Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, he brings a wealth of experience and expertise to the field of governance and sustainable development.

Mr. Opong-Fosu’s journey in public service began with his role as a technocrat, where he headed Ghana’s largest public service organization, the Local Government Service. In this capacity, he was instrumental in ensuring effective and efficient administration and management of local governments, reflecting his commitment to impactful governance.

His political career is equally noteworthy, having served as Mayor, Member of Parliament, and holding various ministerial portfolios related to Local Government, Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation. His leadership roles include President of the National Association of Local Authorities of Ghana, President of the Africa Union of Local Authorities, and Chairman of the Africa, Caribbean, Pacific Local Government Platform, among others.

Recognized for his contributions to governance and sustainable development in Africa, Mr. Opong-Fosu has received accolades from prestigious organizations such as the United Cities and Local Governments, 3re Diversity and Inclusion Congress, and the Rainbow PUSH Coalition. His passion for Africa’s growth and development is evident in his advocacy efforts, where he emphasizes the importance of Africa’s position and voice in a globalized world.

Currently, Mr. Opong-Fosu serves as the President of Africa Growth Solutions, a public policy, advocacy, and advisory think tank based in Ghana. Additionally, he chairs the Africa Global Emergence Center, further demonstrating his dedication to driving positive change and progress in Africa and beyond.
